Guest Speaker:  Dr. S. Anne Hancock

U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige’s Regional Representative REGION IV

President George W. Bush appointed Dr. S. Anne Hancock to be U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige’s Regional Representative for Region IV of the U. S. Department of Education. . Dr. Hancock serves as the Secretary’s envoy and spokes-person and represents the policies, initiatives, and programs of President Bush.

Dr. Hancock serves as the Department of Education’s liaison to state and local education agencies, public and private schools, colleges and universities, and elected officials of local and state government organizations.  She works to implement the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and to close the achievement gap between the rich and poor students in America’s more than 89,599 schools.

Dr. Hancock is a nationally recognized speaker and presenter in the areas of collaboration and community reform.  She has presented over 350 speeches and seminars in 44 states and abroad.

Dr. Hancock has a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Educational Leadership, a M.B.E. and Ed. S. degrees from Georgia State University, and a B. S. degree from Coker College in Hartsville.  She has done post-doctoral study at Harvard.  She is the first woman academician to be named an Honorary Alumna of Clemson University and was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from her undergraduate alma mater, Coker College.

President's Corner

July was a very busy month for CCRWC.  The float for President Bush was met with enthusiastic cheers and applause at the Marietta July 4th parade.  Over 5,000 Bush/Cheney bumper stickers were given out along the parade route.

Our three candidate forums were a resounding success.  Enormous thanks go out to Campaign Activities Chairman, Millie Rogers, Forum Chairmen, Donna Rowe and Susan Roberts, and Steve Mitchell, our Forum Moderator.   I would like to thank the forum volunteers:  Babe Atkins Byrne, Kristin Callaway, Nancy Bodiford, Patricia Fuller, Rose Wing, Roseanne Hall, Billie Dendy, Mellanie Chorney, Sharon Herndon, Ellie Heaton, Holly Comer, Diane Graham, Lil Day, Rowland Beaushe, and Chelly McDuffie.  Numerous candidates have thanked us for sponsoring this informative event.

The Democrats, along with their water boys in the national media, continue to politicize the war in Iraq; a campaign has been waged to demoralize the American public and altogether ignore the successes concerning the war.   We became seemingly easy victories over the last decade:  from the Persian Gulf War of 1991 to the Afghanistan War of 2001.  While there were casualties, few of them were on our side.  In Kosovo we did not lose a single life.  Unfortunately many have forgotten what real war looks like.  At least 200,000 American soldiers have served in Iraq.  Since the war began, we have lost over 800 service people.  The total casualty rate for the Iraq War is about 2.5%.  How does that compare with previous U.S. wars?    The Democrats and their co-hosts in the media do not want to admit it, but the losses we have suffered in Iraq are among the lowest of any of our major conflicts.  In Vietnam, for example, the casualty rate was 6.2%; in World War I and World War II, slightly more than 6.5%.  The Iraq War rate seems high only because our unstated benchmark is the 1991 Gulf War (total casualty rate: 0.14%).  This is not meant to diminish the sacrifices of our soldiers; for friends and family members, no statistics can mitigate their grief.  Yet historically speaking, what’s remarkable is how few casualties we have suffered, not how many.  It takes a long time to bring order out of chaos.  We occupied West Germany for 4 years after l945, Japan for 7 years, and the Philippines for almost a half-century after the Spanish-American War.  Bosnia is still occupied by the international community 9 years after the end of the conflict, as is Kosovo 5 years later.  The fact that an interim Iraqi government has already been established (June 28) and elections are to be held by next January is actually quite rapid by historical norms.  I am not suggesting that everything has been perfect in regard to Iraq.  Mistakes and setbacks occur in every war.  It is imperative that Americans understand the relationship between their security and the war in Iraq.  The Middle East is the epicenter of the terror network.  I would only ask American voters, ‘which presidential candidate would the terrorists like to see in office?’  The answer is obvious.

May God continue to bless our troops, our President, and our nation.

Sincerely, Felicity

Caring for America

At this Friday's CCRWC luncheon, we will be collecting school and food supplies for a “Feed My Lambs” preschool located in the Cole Street housing projects in Marietta.  The 6th and 11th District delegations to the GOP Convention painted the interior of this school a few weeks ago as part of President George W. Bush's Compassion for America initiative.   Elizabeth Price and Cindy Lamutt both participated in the painting project.

Please bring any of the following supplies or a $5 donation to this Friday's meeting: Jumbo Crayons, Jumbo Chalk, Kids Safety Scissors, Glue Sticks, Paint Sets (primary colors) and Construction Paper; Canned Fruit, Vegetables, Soup and Mac & Cheese; Paper Products. Thank You!

Ways and Means Report

Martha Dearman, Chairman

Even though we didn't have our monthly luncheon in July, we raised $349.00 at other functions.  This sum surpassed d what we normally would raise at a monthly luncheon.

One of the newest table items is the Ronald Regan Poster "Profile of a Leader", donated by Mrs. Donna Rowe.

Our biggest seller is still the George W. Bush Presidential Deck of playing cards.  Also a collector’s item, the deck displays the President and First Lady as the King and Queen, members of the president’s cabinet, and everyone's favorite jokers Senators John Kerry and Ted Kennedy
